(New York, July 19, 1997)

Masae UEZUMI develops her paintings by combining her actual
recollection of the scenery in her surroundings with the images
they inspire. During her time in Europe, Uezumi developed an intuitive
response to color and shape which manifests itself on the canvases.

She recently completed a series of paintings based on the scenery in
Central Park. The trees creates a gentle and fantastic space that persists
within the fabricated landscape of the park in the midst of the big city,
subverting the perception of New York as the hardest and most vigorous city
in the world.

However, her approach to the scenery is not intensive but subtle
which transforms from direct visual experience into her own
world of images, A world with its own specific colors which are
different from the actual. Uezumi uses an accumulation of transparent
colors not on a pallet but directly on canvas. She realizes delicate
color changes while representing a peculiar image.
